Reclaiming Our Culture
Sankofa teaches us that we must go back to our roots in order to move forward. That is, we should reach back and gather the best of what our past has to teach us, so that we can achieve our full potential as we move forward by planting seeds for future generations to thrive from.
The Meaning of Sankofa
"It is not wrong to go back for that which you have forgotten."
The Sankofa ( sahn- ko- fah) is a metaphorical symbol in the Twi language ( pronounced "tree") used by the Akan people of Ghana in West Africa.
It's depicted as a stylized heart or a mythical bird that has its head turned backward taking a valuable egg ( the future), within its mouth from its back while its feet are firmly facing forward as it flies expressing the importance of reaching back to knowledge gained in the past and bringing it into the present in order to make positive progress.
